Halloween! My favorite time of the year; when everyone gets to dress up like ANYTHING they want and still be socially accepted. Awesome! I, myself usually dress up like some creepy undead creature, however, last year I dressed up like a mermaid. I am going to give you some makeup and illusion techniques for being a scary undead creature and for being a beautiful scaly mermaid :) Here's how to look instantly dead or undead like the picture to the right: 1. For the face: Lightly brush dark shadows with shades of black, brown, and grey around and especially under your eyes, on your temples, on each side of the nose, under the cheek bones (suck your cheeks in and trace the line from your upper ear fading to the outer crease of your lips.) Next, shade in your neck from the outer jaw bones down in a "v" shape to your trachea. Any other shading is up to you! 2. Darken or lighten lips according to what look you want. I went with the dark "bloody" lips that are great for a more sexy appearance, or you can lighten the lips with a whitish blue/purple to give the lips a cold dead look. Keep the inner part of the lips a litter darker then fade outwards. 3. Blood: lightly trace uneven blood drips down from the corners of the mouth. Make one side of the mouth with a little more blood spilling out and only a little out of the other. Use a red or burgundy lip liner to draw the blood, then add a powder or shadow of similar shades over the lip liner to seal in the color. For a more detailed look, have the blood be different shades in different areas. You can also use the same technique for blood coming out of the eyes, I recommend only using the inner corner of the eyes where the tear ducts are, it will look more natural. 4. Cuts: You can use the same methods above to create cuts and bruises.
4. And the main attraction: Scales!
Buy a couple different shades of loose sequins from a craft store. I used emerald green and an iridescent white. Apply them to the skin by using false eyelash glue. I used a clear glue called brush on ModLash adhesive by Andrea which can be found at local drug stores. Put the sequins on a portion of one side of the face (pictured above-right) and a few on the cheek bone on the other side. I also put patches on my chest, collar bone, upper arm and thigh. And Voila! You're a mermaid! Thursday, September 30, The Falls Shopping Center held a cancer fundraiser called: "Strut your Stuff for Cancer." My Snake Charmers and I donated a free performance for the cause. We started off our set with a solo performance from me to get things started (video above); however, soon after I started dancing... it started to RAIN! Not just a little drizzle, but a full on storm with lightning and thunder! So what does a belly dancer do in this situation you may ask? Well, with this particular belly dancer, "The Show Must Go On!" So I kept dancing my heart out and actually had even more fun as the rain hit my face and the thunder provided more "boom" to my performance. The crowd, all gathered under umbrellas and overhangs, stared intently as I dared to shimmy, spin, and undulate on a wet stage. Before you know it, my song had ended and the applause had began. Next up, "Shayna and the Snake Charmers!" My performance troupe had no fear as they took the stage with excitement and a slight hint of nervousness in their eye. After some slight music issues, we were able to dance (as good as we could all huddled together to stay under the little overhang above us.) All in all, we did our thang and showed courage and personality while we did it. In my experience, these uncontrollable-random-unfortunate situations provide for a more exciting and memorable show!
